Impact
More than 70 million Americans have a disability—one in five members of any community.
One in seven students have a disability that substantially impacts their learning or relationships.
One-third of households have at least one family member impacted by disability.
Like anyone else, people with disabilities want a good education, a meaningful job, close friendships, community involvement, a safe place to live, loving relationships, opportunities to contribute, a vibrant faith, a place to belong, and a hope-filled future.
Too often, these ordinary aspirations go unfulfilled for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Most schools, churches, employers, and community programs still struggle to include and support them fully. Families frequently lack needed services and resources. Barriers of awareness, attitude, or architecture still abound. In most communities, opportunities for people with and without disabilities to flourish together are limited.
The Baylor Center for Developmental Disabilities is committed to changing this landscape:
-
We are identifying practices, programs, and policies that transform outcomes.
-
We are pursuing new scientific discoveries.
-
We are determining the best ways to prepare effective practitioners and visionary leaders.
-
We are equipping schools, workplaces, congregations, and communities to welcome and embrace every member impacted by disability.
-
We are pursuing creative community partnerships.
-
We are sparking imagination and introducing innovation.
Faculty, staff, and students affiliated with the Center are deeply invested in impactful projects and partnerships that promote the flourishing of people with disabilities, their families, and communities.
